Bemre Anansi

large format print, 10 Aug 2007

During the Summerjam workshop the staff was asked to integrate the theme of ‘Anansi’ in the project. Anansi is the name of a spider featuring in the Anasi-tales, traditional parables of African culture brought to Suriname during the age of slavery. I wanted the students to create spiders of the artists that would perform at the Summerjam bash. To give an example I made this image together with the photography department. The print was displayed at the Summerjam exhibition. The image and the print was also used by the Anansi-Masters organisation for the Anansi Exhibition at the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam to represent a modern version of Anansi.
